I am the contact for the Blenheim Wing Chun club and work in closely with Sifu Awatea Edwins from Kiapoi.
I have over 28 years experience in martial arts but unfortunally not all in Wing Chun. Among other things I am a black belt in Ryuku Kempo Karate.
My Wing Chun journey began 16 years ago in Oamaru when I was working with Sifu Awatea Edwins for a Private Maori Training Provider. I was the pet white fella running the outdoors pursuits coarse.
Following an initial invite and three months training it rapidly became apparent that I had learned more effective self defence in this time than ten years of training in TKD, kick Boxing, Zen Do Kai and Judo combined.
I trained for two years with Awatea and we all parted ways and moved on with jobs and families to different districts, I ended up back in Blenheim.
I started training in Kempo Karate and after seven years got to a level where it was hard to progress further but new there was more to learn. I tracked Sifu Edwins down and started retraining in WC.
The interested thing about retraining was that although I may of forgotten the origins of my more effective techniques I never lost the foundation of those earlier years of training, as my Karate training partners would willingly admit.
I am lucky to have a large private training gym, but a small club at the moment as I work though the final stages of Resource Consent issues with the local District Council. So all going well watch this space.
We have a rural setting with plenty of accommadation and an open door policy to any Wing Chun people passing through.
