About Me

Began kung fu training over three decades ago, have learned boxing, karate, wrestling, Pa Kua Chang, Pentjak Silat, Eskrima, Kali, Taiji Quan, Fut Gar, Tong Long Kuen, Shaolin,Ling Lom, Ue-Kaha No Roto. First experienced Wing Tsun Kuen in Wellington in the early 1980's whilst primarily learning Fut Gar and Tong Long Kuen but really got serious with the Wing Chun after meeting Master Kevin Earle  when I joined the Timaru Branch of Earles Academy.

My Immediate Sihing at the time were Charles Roebuck, Bryan Finn and Honty Morris (Whaanga). After the first meeting with Master Kevin I was a convert and have practiced Ving Chun Kuen since.

Aside from Ving Chun Kuen I am also a lineage holder of my families traditional warrior arts (Ue-Kaha No Roto) and continue to practice this and pass it on to all those interested in it.

Over the years I have been privileged to train with other Wing Chun masters and instructors including Beau Bouzaid and Grandmaster Chu Seung Tin.

I am pleased to be able to have had these experiences but am also honoured to call Master Kevin my Sifu and to know I got my art from the original Wing Chun teacher in New Zealand.

I now have my own schools which  I established 15 years ago this year in Dunedin. And am now  based in Kaiapoi with branches in Christchurch at Bishopdale, Dunedin, Blenheim and shortly in Rotorua. I also have a senior student in Hervey Bay in Queensland, Australia who is teaching privately and my first student Greg Columb teachers privately in Timaru.

Awatea, you have enough material to start your own library! The article I have is not about Greg, it only mentions him. I really would like to read more about him, so thank you. Send me an email anytime -- email address on Southern's wee blog page.

Hi Awatea. We met once in Auckland whn you came up to help a bunch of us, and I also came to Dunedin a couple of times, but sadly you were no longer there, and Terry (?) was also just heading overseas, so that avenue closed. Anyway, if there is anyone in Dunedin that you could give me contact details for that would be fantastic, it's much closer to me than Chch or Timaru.

Many thanks
Warren (Waz)
